10 Fun Accent Pillows to Add Personality to Your Space
10 Fun Accent Pillows to Add Personality to Your Space
If you're looking to refresh your home décor on a budget, one simple way to do it is by adding some fun and quirky accent pillows. A cleverly chosen accent pillow immediately draws the eye and make your space more cohesive. Plus, pillows are an easy way to have fun with your décor and help to add personality to any room. When choosing accent pillows for your bed, sofa or chairs, there are several things to take into consideration. First, you don't want to go overboard. A bed with a mountain of pillows can look chaotic, while a sofa with too many pillows can be just plain uncomfortable. Instead, try finding balance with fewer pillows that have more personality. Second, consider the details of each pillow. Textures, prints, shapes, colors and trim are all ways you can play around with your home style. If you're not sure where to start looking for fun and clever throw pillows, we're here to help. Designer jeansJeans are important to own, yes, but not just any jeans. The right jeans. Some people don't like spending a lot of money on jeans, and to those people, I say okay, but have you ever owned long-lasting, ultra comfortable designer jeans? As an unofficial ambassador for Madewell jeans, I do think mid-tier priced jeans are nice to have. BUT as someone who has also owned a fair share of AG and Paigejeans, I do understand the benefits of sporting these pricier designer pants. The stretch, material, and style goes a long way-and their comfort does last a long time. When you can get trendy designer jeans on sale, it is always a steal. Urban Glamping? This Chicago Hotel Offers a Suite Adventure
Urban Glamping? This Chicago Hotel Offers a Suite Adventure
The Gwenflies under the radaramong thebigger, brandedtop luxury hotels in Chicago. It's conveniently located on Michigan Avenue and connected to Shops at North Bridge, but it used to be a Conrad Hotel and is often overlooked despite its massive renovations over the past couple years and sleek new art deco design. The Luxury Collection hotel is named after Chicago sculptress Gwen Lux, who designed the mythological stone bas relief on the facade of the historic building. Replicas of her original work adorn the hotel entry and bronze metal screens and plush blue velvet couches accent the lobby. This summer, The Gwen is taking luxury in a new direction with a glamping package that offers urban adventure in a way that's never before been seen in Chicago."In Chicago, so much of our summer is spent outdoors," director of sales and marketing Marcus Cornelious explains. For the past two seasons, since Starwood took over the hotel, The Gwen has put a greater emphasis on activating their fifth-floor terrace lounge with parties, specialty menus, ice cream pop-ups, champagne carts and a new mural by local artist Jas Petersen. This has helped draw in a local crowd in addition to hotel guests but this summer they're taking the outdoor experience a step further with an over-the-top glamping experience in the Gwen Lux presidential suite."How do you get guests excited about a room when visitors want to be outside?" Cornelious asks. "The glamping tent was a way to combine both the glamour and luxury of the hotel's suite with the vibrant energy of Chicago summers. There are surely some fantastic presidential suites in the city, but how many offer a stunning backdrop and private patio?" Not to mention a prettyspectacular set up to experience both. It's the first time a Chicago hotel has offered urban glamping. Book the two-bedroom Gwen Lux Suite, and have a bohemian tent set up on the private 1,000 square foot terrace - the largest in the city. Braided rugs, macramé seat cushions, Frette linens and colorful throw pillows ensure a stylish and luxurious night under the stars enjoying the city's majestic architecture. Roundtrip airport transportation and a fanciful s'mores turndown amenity with a cayenne marshmallow and Taza chocolate are included with the option to add on a glamping tasting menu served by Chef Matt Jergens himself.Hotel restaurants often get a bad rap, but Jergens is dressing up proteins like grilled steak and salmon with bright flavors on the fifth-floor terrace lounge, along with an array of delicious vegetarian options including charred tomato toast with kale basil chimichurri and smoked cauliflower with hazelnut tahini and curried sultanas. This is exactly the kind of food you'd want to share with friends while sitting outside sipping champagne or rosé.Jergens says he grew up in Massachusetts camping a lot as a kid. For the special glamping menu, he wanted to create a playful, yet upscale version of camp favorites, beginning with a "hot dog on a stick" with foie gras sausage, saba and cracklings and ending with "camp fire pie"composed of milk bread, cherries, vanilla gelato and malted whipped cream. With the addition of the tent, the suite has three bedrooms total. So feel free to invite friends over for a dance party and sabre a bottle of champagne. The world, or at least the city, feels like your oyster from this unique perch with views north up Michigan Avenue to the John Hancock skyscraper and Lake Michigan. You're so close you could almost touch the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower and you could even project a movie onto the wall of the InterContinental Chicago across the street."The glamping package appeals to someone who wants luxury furnishings and the best service, but is also looking for something outside the norm," Cornelious says. The tent takes several hours to set up, and there's an extension cord so guests can charge electronics while they sleep. Even during a citywide excessive heat warning it's possible to sleep outside as it cools down quite a bit once the sun goes down and they set up a Dyson bladeless fan in the tent to keep the air flowing. Expect to wake up at the crack of dawn to savor sunrise from your terrace campground. The Gwen Lux Suite starts at $3,500 per night while the suite plus glamping experience begins at $5,500 per night.

Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes, so Their Sofas Must Be Up to Speed
Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes, so Their Sofas Must Be Up to Speed
About 25 years ago, Alexandria-based interior designer Jill Mastrostefano had what she described as "my number one 'aha' moment." Her critical insight: "I realized that everyone wants to come home and feel like they are on vacation."The feeling starts as they pull into their driveway. After an hour on the Beltway, people can't wait to get inside and immediately plop down in a relaxing space on a really comfortable chair," said Mastrostefano, the creative director of the P Four firm.It took nearly two decades for Mastrostefano's idea to catch on, but things began to change about five years ago, as new houses shrank in size and households began to embrace an increasingly informal lifestyle with fewer belongings.Although homeowners may not conceive of their home in these terms, the hugely popular, open-plan great room - a smaller, stripped-down, simplified version of the eat-in kitchen and family room with some personal touches but fewer pieces of furniture and knickknacks - often has the spare look and feel of a vacation cottage, albeit one with more upscale finishes and appliances than you would typically find in a vacation rental. As the overall space in the great room has become smaller and the furnishings simpler, the windows have grown larger, and 8-foot-high sliding glass doors are increasingly common. All this additional glass area brings in more natural light and a stronger connection to the outdoors, another hallmark of the getting-away-from-it-all vacation house. Choosing furniture for everyday vacation living, however, can be challenging because the way most homeowners use furniture in the sitting area of their great room and the way they sit in it have changed, Mastrostefano and several other interior designers and furniture designers said. The "off-the-clock" postures that have become the norm in many households - slouching, lounging, squirming, stretched out and napping, curled up and reading, using a laptop, or watching television - are not easily accommodated in the conventional sofas and armchairs that worked so well in your old family room or living room. And functionally, sofas today are used for ever more household activities, often serving as a home office as well as a place for homework, relaxation and play. "In some families now, the sofa is used for everything, and it's become the hub of multitudes of activities," Phoenix architect and furniture designer Daniel Germani said. With such a broad range of postures and activities, the perfect sofa solution for most households will be a sectional because it's unusually versatile. Unlike a conventional sofa, it's made up of individual pieces so that you can mix different sizes and include a chaise at one or both ends, and you can arrange the pieces into an L shape or a straight line. "It also has a great look and it adds to the casualness of the space," Greenwood Village, Colo., interior designer Lita Dirks said. With so many variables, which sectional combination is the right one for you? The size of the area where you plan to put it is a good starting point, but for maximal comfort, the experts said the most important dimensions to factor in are the size of the adults in the household. In most families they are not the same, and the sectional needs to accommodate everyone. To accomplish this, throw pillows - an integral part of a sectional and not just a visual accessory - can be added or removed.Whether sitting or slouching, the adults should be able to have their feet on the floor and not dangling. "For most people this means a seat height that is about 18 inches off the floor," said Washington interior designer Skip Sroka."A seat depth of about 21 inches should be workable for most couples, but with this depth many women, who are typically shorter, will need to put one or two throw pillows behind them to get good lumbar support," Sroka said. "A taller person - someone over 6 feet 2 inches - may need a 23-inch depth, and this will allow the shorter person to curl up and read, work on a laptop or watch television. But for back support when simply sitting, the shorter person will likely want a sturdier pillow custom made to their precise requirements," Sroka said. The overall width, an important dimension because it's the one manufacturers use to distinguish one group of sectionals from another, should be about 36 inches, he added.A 42-inch sectional - a size that is widely available - with a really deep 33-inch seat may look like what you want. But, characterizing it as "monstrous and awkward," Sroka said: "To get good back support you must wiggle backwards about a foot or else use a lot of pillows." A better solution for stretching out, he said, is to incorporate a chaise piece at one or both ends of a sectional. In addition to the pillows, the back of the sectional itself also provides lumbar support. To be adequate, the back should project about 15 to 18 inches above the seat, Germani said. The overall height can be as much as 36 inches, but for households who entertain a lot, Germani designed a sectional with a 30-inch height (the same height as a bar stool) and a flat top that can be used for additional seating. It also appears to be a perfect perch for a small dog or cat to survey all the goings on in the big space. For overall comfort, the fill and feel of a sectional is another important consideration, and this will depend on the amount of foam or down in the stuffing, the experts said. When it's 100 percent foam, the seat will feel very firm; if one of the adults has back issues, it will give more lumbar support, Sroka said. When the stuffing is 100 percent down, you will feel like you're gently sinking into your sofa, Germani said. This works for some people, especially if they are young. But speaking for himself as a 51-year-old, he said, "It can be a challenge to get up, and an elderly person may need help."For most people, "a foam cushion with a down wrap feels best and the combination looks better because it has a softer edge," Sroka said.Armed with the relevant dimensions and fill preferences, how hard is it to select the right sectional? It won't be hard to judge comfort, said Portland, Maine, furniture designer Doug Green, who recommended spending several afternoons in a furniture store trying out the floor models. "You can tell in five minutes if you feel comfortable with your feet on the floor and your back touching the cushion. If the stuffing is too soft, you'll feel really good at first, but you'll start to feel uncomfortable pretty quick."But, Green added, "you'll need more time to see if it really works for you because no one sits still for very long. We are constantly slightly repositioning our bodies, so whether you're lounging or sitting, you need a sofa or armchair that lets you easily wiggle around. I always tell people to bring something to read and plan to spend at least 30 minutes in a piece of furniture before making their final choice."Dirks said that for her, comfort was not enough."For pieces that you will be using for many hours every day, you also have to really like them," Dirks said. Her rule of thumb: "If you love it, buy it! When you surround yourself with pieces you love, the pieces will blend and go together nicely and your personality will come out because they're like bits and pieces of you. You may think you have no sense of design at all, but trust your instincts."If you want to mix in a few pieces from your old house, Dirks said the love test should apply there, too. "If you love it, keep it. If you don't love it, get rid of it. People feel they must keep things that were more expensive, but they may not be the pieces that you loved or even sat in very often. It's like clothing - how many times have you bought an expensive jacket but never wore it? But a piece of jewelry cost 12 bucks and you just love it."Compared to selecting a sofa, stools for the great room's central island may seem fairly straightforward. But refinements can affect your comfort here as well, Germani said."A wood stool with a seat that's molded to the curve of your leg and bottom will work, but if you want something that encourages the sitter to linger, get a padded seat." And, he added, "the stool will be more comfortable for anyone over 50 if you get one with a back." Likewise with dining chairs - padded seats will be more comfortable and encourage the kind of lingering you want for a leisurely dinner party or special family occasion, Germani said. 8 Tricks to Designing a Luxurious Bedroom for Less
8 Tricks to Designing a Luxurious Bedroom for Less
Neila Deen, Houzz ContributorLooking to give your bedroom a luxe look? Before investing in a pricey designer dresser, think strategically - and a bit more critically - because spending a fortune on furniture doesn't necessarily guarantee a sophisticated look. What actually makes a bedroom look like a million dollars are its thoughtful details. These eight ideas from luxurious bedrooms can help make yours look expensive and feel more plush and inviting.1. Dress your walls in elegance. Unless you're going for an ultra minimalist look, bare white walls in a bedroom can feel more stark than luxurious. Embrace a little paint or wallpaper to give your bedroom a warmer, more designed look.In this photo, a rich gray paint stylishly contrasts with the paler elements of the room, including the bed, rug and window treatments. If the walls were a shade of white, these simple decorative pieces wouldn't have the same impact.Wall paint: Amherst Gray HC-167, Benjamin Moore2. Choose a standout headboard. Adding a luxe-looking headboard is a surefire way to increase the glam factor in your bedroom. A beautiful one need not be expensive, but it should have a notable feature such as a bold color, unique shape, impressive height or elegant fabric such as linen or velvet.3. Feature glamorous lighting. Whether it's a ceiling fixture, table lamps or pendants, statement lighting amps up the luxury factor. You might choose a fixture or lamp with a shiny finish - perhaps gold, glass or crystals. Selecting one with a large or unusual shape can also help the room look more upscale.4. Add stylish seating. If you have unused space near a window nook, beside a nightstand or in front of your bed, consider adding an accent chair or bench. From a practical standpoint, it will give you a place to sit and read or to temporarily place some clothing. And from an aesthetics perspective, this styling trick - often seen in boutique hotels - offers an opportunity to bring a notable design element to your room.5. Frame your bed with mirrors. One trick designers use to add a little glamour to a room is to place a mirror on the wall above each nightstand, behind any lamp or pendant light. This adds glitzy style to the bed wall and creates greater depth in the room, making it perfect for small spaces.Try selecting a mirror with a unique detail, such as a gilded finish or unusual shape. The extra design element will go a long way toward adding high style to even the most ordinary bedroom.6. Choose nightstands with bling. Night tables are pretty essential pieces of bedroom furniture. But many tend to be a bit utilitarian in terms of style, and they can get cluttered with our necessities. To give your bedroom the royal treatment, first declutter your nightstand. Remove excess paperwork and possessions, leaving only lighting, a book and perhaps a small vase of flowers.Next, swap out your current nightstand for one with a luxury finish - mirror or shagreen is a great option. A subtler route is to choose a piece with reflective hardware, such as crystal or brass.7. Pile on the pillows. We've all seen images of the drool-worthy bedrooms with an almost embarrassing amount of throw pillows on the bed. This decadent look can be achieved with a combination of larger Euro-sized pillows (typically 26 inches by 26 inches), standard sleeping pillows and two to three smaller throw pillows. To avoid an overstuffed look, the rule of thumb is that all these pillows shouldn't take up more than a quarter of the bed length. For ultra luxurious style, select throw pillows in high-end fabrics such as silk, velvet and faux fur.8. Throw on a plush blanket. Many luxurious bedrooms feature a soft throw blanket. Investing in a material that looks expensive can jazz up even the plainest bed.Related: Duvet, Quilt, Coverlet or Comforter - Which One Do You Really Want?Original article on Houzz.

Furnish Your Place on the Cheap -
Furnish Your Place on the Cheap -
I needed to sell my condo. The real estate agent was reassuring; even in this market, it can be done, she said. There are still buyers out there. Then she saw the place. "This furniture....mmm," she said, looking over my collection of orange and blue mid-century chairs and tables, painstakingly collected through years of Ebay-trolling. All of it dinged and worn; mint Eames and Knoll are beyond the reach of the average single girl."It's very, very....interesting. Personally, I like it," she said diplomatically."But it won't sell."So there it was: I had to find an apartment's worth of buyer-friendly furniture. In a month. For as close to no cash as possible. Closings aren't cheap.Furniture, even small pieces, can be budget-breakingly expensive. But if you're willing to work a little, you can find it for much less than you'd pay at a furniture store or via catalog. (Or even at a high-design, low-cost chain like Ikea or Target -- they're great, but if you're counting every penny, you can do better.)None of these venues offer warrantees, nice packaging, delivery service or the range of choice you'll find in a store. They are not convenient. But they are cheap. The attics of family and friendsBy far the most economical place to pick up a few tables, chairs or bookshelves is among the discards of your nearest and dearest. Not to worry if the finish on that chair that's been sitting in grandma's damp basement is worn: About $5 buys you a can of all-purpose spray-paint, which hides a multitude of sins. (Remember to sand everything before you spray, and learn from my mistake: Spray paint outdoors. Accidental graffiti on kitchen cabinets is not a good look.) Try Krylon brand spray paint, available at Michael's and Ace Hardware stores --it adheres to anything, including metal and plastic. Tip: The darker the paint color, the better it is at hiding irregularities you can't sand out.If you'd rather keep the look of wood, try a product called McFate's Restorz-It: Available only online at restorzit.com, this is a varnish that doesn't require you to strip furniture before it's applied. It's pricey -- $49.95 a bottle -- but one bottle can gloss up a kitchen's worth of cabinetry, or a whole apartment's worth of furniture. I was skeptical, but the stuff lives up to its billing: Nicks, scratches and watermarks on old wood disappeared, or at least receded, under this thick, satin-finish coating. The attics of strangersSpring and summer are high seasons for garage sales -- check the classifieds, keep tabs on estate sale websites like njestateandmovingsales.com, or just drive around the neighborhood. Better yet, drive around a really expensive neighborhood, where the discards are often surprisingly high-end. Go early to get the best stuff. Bring cash, a large vehicle and a strong friend -- you never know when you'll find, as I did, a gorgeous cream-linen-covered armchair for a mere $70 at a house sale in ritzy Millburn. (Price for a similar armchair covered in poly at Target: $239.99.)Craig's ListProbably the best furniture bargain on the web is this location-specific website (craigslist.com) where millions of folks cleaning out their houses post pictures of the furniture they're giving away for a song -- and sometimes less. (While eBbay charges to post items for sale, Craig's List postings are free and dazzlingly simple to use -- so older folks getting rid of half a century's worth of stuff as they downsize are more likely to post here.) For the best deals, check out the "free stuff" listings under the "for sale" category. As I type, there are current listings for a free desk, night stand, chest of drawers, a love-seat and even a kitchen stove in the Northern New Jersey Craig's List "free stuff" posts. It may not be glamorous furniture, but it's a lot cheaper to buy, say, a love seat slipcover for $49 at Target, than to buy the love seat itself. And throw pillows do wonders.Consignment storesThey're not just for clothing any more! Consigned furniture tends to be nicer than garage sale or Craig's List discards -- since the proprietor has a stake in selling it -- and still cheaper than almost any furniture bought new. At C. J.'s Furniture Consignment on Bloomfield Avenue in Fairfield (973-444-3533), I found a dining room table and four chairs -- dark wood with cream upholstery seats -- for $140. (Cheapest wood table and chair set at Ikea: $149.95 -- but that's for unfinished wood, and chairs without upholstery.) Sure, there were some less-than-shiny spots in the finish of my new tabletop. That's what tablecloths are for.

8 Gifts for the President-elect Who Has It All: Jill Lawrence
8 Gifts for the President-elect Who Has It All: Jill Lawrence
What do you get for the president-elect who has it all, most of it encrusted in gold? Christmas shopping for Donald Trump is a challenge. But there are a few items he might appreciate under his treenevertheless. And the ones he doesn't appreciate, well, he needs those most of all.So here are eight gifts for an incoming president that he probably hasn't requested and that mightnot have occurred to his friends and family:"Unprecedented adventures and unsurpassed luxury" on acruise from Anchorage to New York through the Northwest Passage. This isa long trip, 32 days starting in August, but the Crystal Serenity is boat enough to be able to handle a replica Oval Office (a set, if you will)from which the celebrity president could conduct business (perform, if you will). We're talking penthouses with verandas and Riedel stemware. It's not Trump Tower, true. But here's what makes thisirresistible (aside from the chanceto go AWOL from D.C. during the swampiest time of the year): It's a prime andprolonged opportunity for Trump to tout the economic benefits of global warming, such asexpected booms in tourism and other industriesin communities along the formerly frozen Northwest Passage. It's also an exciting chance to glimpse polar bearsthathave been moving north tofind moreice.Fares startat$21,855,and you can bet it will cost a lot more to accommodate a President Trump, but you can also bet that Melania and the kids - and we taxpayers - can afford it.Fast-food mix pack of gift cards for Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hardee's and Carl's Jr.Let no onedoubtthatTrump isaman of the people.Fancyreproduction of George Washington's annotatedcopy of the Constitution, laminated in anticipation of heavy use. Hisjob being so new at the time, Washingtonwent through the document and wrote "president" next to each section that explained some executive powerthis just invented "president" person needed to worry about. The result is a handy cheat sheetfor a novice with a short attention span.President'sDaily Brief flashcards pack, for the busy chief executive on the run from country to country, from Trump hotel to Trump hotel, who wants to keep up with threats to the homeland. Sample question: Which international leader was personally involved with hacking the Democratic National Committee?Free passes and a generous concession package for Dad and his five kids to see the new film Two Presidents at a Time, amadcap comedy (and maybe someday even a real one!) about a president-elect who launches his own foreign policy three months before taking office. From humiliations and confusion to an inadvertent trade war and a barely averted real war, many mishaps and pratfalls ensue as the incoming chief executive pals around with dictators, upends world relationships, and keeps tens of millions entertained with his refreshingly spontaneous tweets and phone conversations.Related: Presidential Tweets for All Occasions, a (hopefully soon to be written) guide for the propriety-, empathy- and diplomacy-impaired commander in chief hacking a path through the social media jungle. Yes: "Our prayers are with those injured and killed early this morning in horrifying act of terror in Orlando." No: "Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!" Yes: "My heart breaks for Aleppo." No: "Has anyone looked at the really poor numbers of @VanityFair Magazine. Way down, big trouble, dead! Graydon Carter, no talent, will be out!"POLICING THE USA:Alook at race, justice, mediaSampler and throw pillows tastefully cross-stitched with this message (thanks and apologies to the Politico leadership): "POTUS is representing America at all times and on all platforms, and must present himself accordingly." Once bestowed, cross your fingersand pray.Give Please a Chance, the (real) new best-sellerby Bill O'Reilly and James Patterson that teaches children the value of being polite. "From finding a lovable stray dog to needing a partner on a seesaw, from reading a bedtime story to really, really needing a cookie,Give Please a Chancedepicts scenes and situations in which one small word can move mountains." I know what you're thinking. Why try to persuade children to be nice when the incoming president rose to the top inbusiness, TV and politics by being a rude and vulgar bully? Why encourage gentle behavior guidelines that will be crushed, mocked and contravened by reality 10 times a day for the next four years? How could O'Reilly, aTrump devotee, write this with a straight face?Let's set all that aside for Christmas, thankfully restored to its high glory and properly exalted status in America by the incoming president and O'Reilly himself. BecauseO'Reilly is the lead co-author on this book, maybe Trump will read it and maybe, in the spirit of Christmas, he'll even take it to heart.Jill Lawrence is the commentary editor of USA TODAY.

Stained Glass Is a Beautiful Way to Add Elegance and Color to Your Home Decor
Stained Glass Is a Beautiful Way to Add Elegance and Color to Your Home Decor
The world of stained glass is a fascinating and beautiful one. There are styles and designs to suit every taste, and a full spectrum of amazing colors to brighten any room. Stained glass can be used in different forms, from lamps, windows and suncatchers to even fireplace screens. In order to choose wisely, here are some tips on using this lovely medium to brighten up your home.Make sure the piece is well-craftedThere are two main types of stained glass; either using lead cane (for larger windows, for stronger support) or copperfoil (most commonly seen in lamps and smaller windows.) Keep this in mind when hiring a glassworker to make a custom window for you. If it is large, it needs to be strong to handle the weight of all that glass. I have a bunch of large lamps made with copperfoil, and they are strong. Look at the piece carefully, to see if it is solidly constructed. Is the solder (metal line between each piece of glass) domed and even? Sometimes a patina is used to darken the color of the silver solder, to make the colors in the glass stand out better. I prefer darker lines between my art glass, it looks more sophisticated, in my opinion. If you are buying a lamp, make sure the base is on the heavy side, to support the weight of the glass. You want a strong enough base that is nicely molded and appears well-put together, from top to bottom. The larger lamps usually have sockets for three bulbs, the mediums have two sockets, and accent or smaller lamps have just one. Choose a lamp that is the correct size for your lighting needs. If you like a lot of detail in your lampshade, choose one with as many glass pieces as possible. I prefer lamps with over 1000 pieces per shade. Cheaper lamps usually have a few large pieces of glass in a basic pattern. It's a matter of personal taste.Make sure that windows have sturdy hanging apparatus like loops or wire if you plan to hang it in front of an existing window in your house. Usually there are loops and a chain to connect them, for hanging. Ask the vendor or artist questions if you have any concerns. We want you to love your piece, whatever kind it is.Choose a piece that is suited to your roomWhen considering the purchase of a stained glass lamp or window, keep in mind the colors and decor of the room you want to put it in. Too much color, all over the place will tire the eyes out and look tacky. So, to avoid that, choose a piece that has at least one or two of the colors in your room, in it. It helps to tie the room together subtly. If you just have to have it but it doesn't match anything, go out and get throw pillows or a vase to put in the room, of the same color, to balance the decor instead. These are tricks used to make the various contents of rooms more harmonious together. When buying lamps, don't overpower the room with too many stained glass piecesBy not overdoing the stained glass look, your room won't end up looking like a fruit salad. For example, in my living room, I have two table lamps, both stained glass, that are similar in color and style. They complement one another because they aren't drastically different. In the corner is a torchiere, or floor lamp, that has a blown glass shade, of a similar color and base design. They all look fine together in the room because they are similar and don't clash with one another. Space the lamps and/or window out, so they aren't too close to one another for the best effect. To keep them sparkling, wipe them down at least once a monthDust can build on lampshades especially, and dull the color and reflectiveness of the glass. Use a glass-cleaning product and cloth to wipe any fuzzballs or dusty residue off the top of the lamp. Follow the manufacturer's directions for cleaning whatever base is used. Usually, Tiffany-replica lamps come with a bronze-look vase. If you want real bronze, you will pay real prices for them, they aren't cheap.Enjoy your new stained-glass lamp or window. They make any room like so inviting, and give it interest. Light will stream through stained glass windows, especially if the glass used is beveled on the edges (cut to shine like a prism.) If you love rainbows in your room, get a window made with many clear, beveled glass pieces and hang it in a sunny window. This can be very electrifyingly colorful if sunlight hits it in the right way.Be warned, if you buy one piece, you will most likely be hooked and want more. That's ok, enjoy this lovely medium, it is a great addition to any home or apartment.
