Sarah Vine Beauty Sleuth: Apaisez votre peau sensible

Favourite Finds for $10 Or Less
Favourite Finds for $10 Or Less
Long before bargain shopping became part of my job, I was a retail junkie. For me, there is something therapeutic about wheeling a grocery cart up and down the aisles or rummaging through sales racks and bins for hot deals on everything from trendy fashions to discontinued Eygptian-cotton sheets. And I get such an adrenalin rush when I snap up nearly-new finds from Goodwill for a song or bag jaw-dropping steals at end-of-season blowout sales. Trust me people: They're out there. Here are just a few of my favourite finds for $10 or less:Not everyone is impressed withOttawa's new Target stores, griping thatpricesat the Canadian outlets are much higher than in the U.S. Overall, that may be true, but if you scout outthe clearance sections like I do, you will find some crazy deals. I have become a big fan of theretailer's Thresholdcollection, which includes decorative pillows, kitchen accessories and dishware. A couple months ago, I found these salmon-coloured plates andfloral-patterned cups on sale for $1.44 each! A friend sawa photo of themon Facebook and asked if I'd bought them at Pier I, where I don't think you can buy anything - let alone a scalloped dinner plateor fancy tea cup -for $1.44. Best part: If you sign up for the Target REDCard, you get another five-cent-off your purchases. Bull's eye!I confess: A day does not go by that I don't light candles to cast a glow on our dinner table, on the tub lip while I take a bubble bathor simply while watching TV. I find candlelight extremely calming and have a hefty stash of candles of all sizes and scents stowed away in my dining room. If there's ever a blackout, head to my house. It'll be the one blazing in the darkness. Buying thesewood-turned candleholders was a no-brainer. I found the pair for 95 cents at St. Vincent de Paul last summer. For spring, Loblaws has a new collection of scented candles in ceramic holders for $4 each. I love the exotic patterns, which come in soft mint, teal, and red, on the outside of the holders. And they smell fantastic without being overpowering. Did I mention they are only $4 eachFootball is huge in our household, especially with two of my four sons playing competitively. Sowe are all anxiously awaiting the arrivalof the RedBlacks to the CFL this summer. Having spent many chilly afternoons and evenings on the sidelines watching a three-hour game - often in the rain or worse, snow - I know how essential warm clothes are for fans of the sport. I'll tell you when I found this RedBlack tuque on clearance for $7 at Walmart a few weeks ago, I didn't buy just one. I bought three. They will definitely be put to good use this season.Halloween has always been my favourite time of year to decorate. And there's no better place to find cheap decorations than at at the dollar store. Last October, I found these plastic arms in plaid sleeves for $2 each. Fun, affordable and eery. Fanastic.

Australian Lexicon Can Leave You a Few Roos Loose - Reuters
Australian Lexicon Can Leave You a Few Roos Loose - Reuters
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Summer in Australia wouldn't be complete without a trip to one of the country's famed beaches. Take your togs or cossies, your esky packed with amber fluid and maybe a dog's eye for a snack. Bend the elbow too much? Stop off for a long black, a short black or a flat white to make sure you don't end up a few kangaroos (roos) loose in the top paddock. Translation: Take your swimwear and cooler box full of beer and a meat pie to eat. A bit too much to drink? Have a small or large black espresso coffee or a white coffee to make sure you are fully compos mentis when you get home. Welcome to the Australian vocabulary. Beyond the stereotyped "G'day" (hello) of souvenir T-shirts and "Crocodile Dundee" movies, are many words rich in tradition that define the Australian identity and give continuity to the variety of voices and experiences that shaped the country's history. As a tourist they are fun to hear, but you'll need to learn them if you plan to call Down Under home. Under planned new citizenship tests designed by the government to bind a nation of immigrants to common values, would-be Australians will have to demonstrate they know the meaning of mateship, having a go and dinkum. Symbolizing the resourceful comradeship at the heart of Australians' self-image, mateship is a close bond of friendship, having a go means a willingness to try anything, while dinkum means genuine or true. Assuming you pass the tests and move to Australia, you'll probably find yourself flat out like a lizard drinking, that's extremely busy, from the hard yakka or labor of your new job. If you get time for a beach picnic try not to let the heat and beer make you chunder or vomit in the dunny, that's toilet. If one word can perhaps symbolize the development of the Australian vocabulary, it could be chunder. Legend has it that the word hails from the time of the British ships that transported convicts to the new colony of Australia. It was a 12-month trip on stormy seas - a prescription for sea sickness. The convicts were housed in bunk-like beds, where they generally ended up when feeling ill. Anyone on the top bunk who was about to vomit would yell "watch out under" to warn inhabitants of the lower bunks of the impending delivery. As with most Australian slang, the original phrase got shortened over time, and watch out under became chunder - or so the story goes. Setting up home in Australia will require a stop at a manchester shop. Manchester is what the locals call bed linen, because Manchester, the northern British industrial city and one-time center of the cotton spinning industry, was the main source of bedding for Australia's early settlers. They'll also sell you a doona - a bed quilt usually filled with feathers and called a duvet in other countries. If you want it delivered, you'll get a docket (receipt) to show the driver. If you're hungry after shopping, pick up a lamington - a square cake made of sponge rolled in chocolate and sprinkled with coconut, supposedly named after Charles Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington and governor of Queensland state from 1896 to 1901. The cake may have originally been made either in an image of the baron's favored hats, or as a way of using up left-over stale sponge. Either way, it's said the baron hated them. Or try an Anzac biscuit, named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACS) who fought in the First World War and whose grit, courage and consummate mateship are imprinted on the national consciousness. A hard biscuit typically of oatmeal and coconut with syrup or treacle, some say it was made by women at home to send to soldiers on the killing fields of France and Gallipoli in Turkey. Others say the name did not appear until after the war. Sweets or candies are called lollies in Australia, and they don't have to be iced, as the word would mean in Britain. Of course it's not all sweetness in any country. In Australia you'll want to avoid a stoush, that's a fight but with the 'ou' pronounced as in 'ouch', with a larrikin or troublemaker, where you might suffer a Larry Dooley or a beating, derived in part from the name of a boxer famous a century ago. And watch out for rorts, that's frauds or con tricks. Unless of course it's only a furphy - a rumor. This word is derived from World War One battlefields where rumors traveled with the carts bringing water to the soldiers in the trenches. The carts were made by the Australian company Furphy.

Scorching Heat at Adelaide Cup Fails to Deter Racegoers
Scorching Heat at Adelaide Cup Fails to Deter Racegoers
EXTREME weather may have affected crowd numbers but racegoers were happy to turn up the heat at yesterday's Adelaide Cup.About 12,500 attended the Morphettville meeting - 4500 less than the expected 17,000 and 6500 fewer than last year's 19,000.However, enthusiasm was high and punters dressed to suit the 37C forecast. This was surpassed at 3pm when the mercury climbed to 38.4C ahead of Norsqui's victory in the main race.Dress codes were relaxed due to the heat and many men decided to forgo a tie. However, some still chose to wear one - albeit with smart shorts to keep cool. The Myer Fashions on the Field competition was hotly contested, with 120 women dressing to impress.Entrants were required to dress for four seasons in one day.In scorching summer weather they needed to wear an outfit which illustrated autumn/winter trends which could also be worn in the springtime should they win and be required to represent the state at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.Floral prints and brocades were popular, as were peplum waists, with many choosing neon brights and metallics. The winner, CFS regional prevention officer Jennifer Marsh, 37, of Naracoorte, wore a silver dress with peplum detailing which she accessorised with safety-cone orange pieces including suede pumps from Myer and a headpiece she had made herself from curtain fabric and homewares."I bought the dress online for $18 and made the headpiece from trivets that you put hot pots on in the kitchen," she said. "I wanted to stand out from the crowd."Ms Marsh, who came second runner-up in the competition in 2011, said she was thrilled to win."I like getting dressed up to go to the races because I wear RM Williams boots and man pants to work ... I'm on the uniform committee so I'm working for something that's a bit female-friendly for the operational staff."The boys at work think it's pretty funny (we won)."Myer ambassador and judge Laura Dundovic, who wore an Aurelio Costarella dress with a burgundy Gregory Ladner floral headpiece, praised the entrants' fashion sense."You make it look comfortable on stage," she said, referring to the extreme weather."There is a great sense of individuality but you are all on-trend - with a different (on-trend) element in every outfit."The weather was no deterrent for loyal race-goer Lauren-Jade Ryan, of Kensington Gardens, who frocked up with her nine-month old daughter Ashleigh Welch."We go to the Adelaide Cup every year as well as the Melbourne Cup," she said."I always love getting dressed up for the day."

Antique Bed Linens - Choosing the Right Size Antique Linen Sheets, Coverlets & Bedspreads
Buying the Right Size Antique or Vintage BeddingLinen sheets, coverlets or bedspreadsOne of the advantages of buying antique bed linen is often the quality of antique bedding is higher than the equivalent priced modern linens. How else can you find such a wide selection of affordable & unique hand sewn bed linensThe difficulty shopping online is that antique bed linens are not marked with bed sizes like modern linens. Don't worry, it's very simple to work out, there's just a few questions to answer. What Size is Your BedStandard Bed SizesCredit: Skeffling Lavender FarmHow thick is your mattress Recommendations for sheet comfort areAdequate length to tuck in at least 8-12" underneath the end of the bed.Adequate width to give 10-15" extra per side for sheets to cover you or tuck under the mattress. What size bed sheets do you need Correct Sheet Width = Width of Mattress Top 20-30"Correct Sheet Length = Length of Mattress Top Mattress Thickness 8-12"If in any doubt, measure one of your own top sheets you are comfortable with and keep the dimensions on a sticky note close on your computer monitor for online shopping.Table for Choosing Correct Sheet SizesCredit: Skeffling Lavender FarmUnused French Metis Linen and Cotton Ladderwork SheetsCredit: Skeffling Lavender FarmSizing Antique BedspreadsChoosing the right size bedspread is very similar to choosing sheets. You need bed size, mattress thickness and bed frame height, which should give the height of mattress top to floor. Heights of bed-frame and pillow-top mattresses vary a lot.Measure your mattress-top height, from top of mattress to floor for best results. It only takes a minute and will save you lots of hassle later!Recommendations for comfort and elegant appearanceAdequate length (including fringe) to reach or nearly reach floor at end of bed (roughly 20-30" on top of mattress length), around 24" highAdequate width (including fringe) to reach or nearly reach floor at each side of bed (roughly 40-60" on top of mattress width), around 48" wideBedspread Width = Width of Mattress Top 2 x (Mattress-top height from floor)Bedspread Length = Length of Mattress Top Mattress-top height from floor For smaller style antique woven coverlets or crochet bedspreads that just reach the bed-skirt, use the sheet calculations. You can still buy the smallest coverlets if you like. Smaller coverlets can be used & displayed folded at the foot of an antique bed, or you can use them to snuggle on the couch.Antique Bedspread Sizing TableCredit: Skeffling Lavender FarmLook for the following When Buying Antique Bed Linens OnlineIf the piece you are considering has a "framed" rectangular bed top portion, it will look nicer if the dimensions match your mattress top sizeYou may find more affordable pieces if wear and repairs are acceptable at the foot of the bed and below the dropSome bedspreads are made with no end frill for footed beds, there's no need to add the end drop dimension when calculating required sizeThe cut-out bedspreads for 4 poster beds are still very pretty on a regular bed with no frame, especially the lace onesCheck shipping costs carefully as some bedding can be surprisingly heavy, especially linen and crochetOften "mistakes" or damaged bedlinens are delightful as draperies and curtains. In the folds and drape, appearance of imperfections is minimalHappy Antique Bed Linen Shopping! These are just a guideline to help you online shopping for beautiful quality antique bed linens. Know About Wet Towels
An Introduction to wet TowelsA finger bowl is a bowl of water used for rinsing one's fingers after the last course of a formal meal served à la russe. It is typically brought to the table at the time of the dessert course, arriving atop the dessert plate, with a linen doily between the plate and the bowl and with the dipping in into fork and spoon on the platePoll: Pet peeves, what's yours? of wet TowelsWet towelsCan oral herpes start out underneath the skin above the upper lip (like a little cystic pimple?)? of wet Towelsthe herpes virus lies in the nerve ending and travels up the nerve to the surface of the skin and can be one single "bump" which will then rupture and scar or the virus may cause several blisters to appear which will then also rupture and scarit is possible to transmit both herpes 1 and 2 without any symptoms but its unusual to get HSV1 while no symptoms are present as HSV1 does not shed as much as HSV2 which has been found to shed quite a lotHSV1 is typically found above the waist and on the face and is oral herpes or cold sores/fever blistersHSV2 is typically found beneath the waist and is genital herpes Do not get it confused though HSV1 and HSV2 are non discriminatory and it is possible to have HSV2 on the face and HSV1 on the genitals...the virus WILL infect any part of the skin but HSV1/2 are determined as such because of their occurrence/re-occurrence in these locations specificallyIf you have HSV1 or HSV2 refrain from making out or sex with an outbreak...even manual stimulation is dangerous as the virus is active and extremely contagious...it could rest on your hands and manual stimulation could lead to transmission For added protection use condoms for any sexual act even without an outbreak because again transmission is possible thru the process known of "shedding" in which the virus is basically shed or released from the nerve ending but does not result in an outbreak...I personally do not know why this occurs but I believe it to be a build up of the virus? One could have casual unprotected sex and NOT transmit the virus as in it is possible but risky...always inform your partner of any diseases or illness you may have including the virusFor even further protection and comfort one could take anti-virals...valtrex is the popular one out but I do believe they have other anti virals...these are pills and can be taken daily as part of a suppressive therapy or they can be taken before the onset of an outbreak by recognizing symptoms of an outbreak (itchiness, redness, tingling sensation at the sight of the usual coldsore-like the upper lip). The virus works by cutting away an enzyme(?) which the virus needs to replicate and "suppresses" the virus so it either never occurs/pops up or when it does it comes in the form of a pimple like blister. The medicine will also reduce the duration and recovery time of viruses but works most effectively as a preemptive measure. There is no cure for the herpes virus. The medication has been said to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus during remissions of outbreaks by reducing viral shedding...there is still a risk of transmission though. valtrex requires a doctors RXthere are over the counter topical creams such as abreva, camophesic, and carmax which claim to reduce the painful symptoms of blisters and speed the healing time of cold sores. rubbing alchol is a kill all and is often used to quickly kill the virus and begin the healing process. tooth paste has also been suggested as a home remedy to "tighten" the virus and "kill the itching". ice in a rag can be applied to also help symptoms. anti bacteria ointments are ineffective because it is a virus one is dealing with, but it is suggested that neosporin MAY help with preventing scarring (which is rare and not typical of cold sores) when applied only AFTER ALL blisters have burst and applied to the recovering sores There are many home remedies as well as home preventatives such as teas, creams, eating right, working out, stress reliving exercises-meditation/yoga/breath control, and supplements such as L-Lysine that have been said to help in preventing cold soressome triggers of cold sores/outbreaks are stress, stimulation of the outbreak location (scratching and rubbing), poor hygiene, poor diet and unfortunately they randomly occurit is said that HSV1/2 can be transmitted thru towels and bed sheets and even toilet seats...this is often dismissed as a myth but potentially possible but extremely extremely extremely unlikely, but do not use wet towels and DO wash your sheets because poor hygiene can trigger cold sores and wet towels and dirty sheets may carry something which will irritate your skin and cause and outbreakHSV1/2 is not a big deal, you won't die, almost everyone has it, wear protection, take precautions, don't be obsessive but it is what it is if you want to take meds for it do that, if you want to take supplements do that, but just know you are doing what you can to deal with it and move onto lifes next more important problem because i promise he or she will get over it just like you are and do and if that's a deal breaker then they aren't worth you and they're missing out....shucks ;)

Why Were the Conservatives Desiring a Southern Iron Curtain Fence to Keep Illegal Immigrants Out?
Why Were the Conservatives Desiring a Southern Iron Curtain Fence to Keep Illegal Immigrants Out?
I am sure it has something to do with the "illegal" part1. up to now i've had a shower curtain but i want to put in sliding doors. how difficult is that?I've had my shower doors for almost 10 years now and will never go back to a shower curtain again. I've never had a problem with keeping them clean at all. Before I get out of the shower I always wipe them down with a dry towel, so easy.2. How can i get my curtain rod up when i can't screw the nails into the wall?suction cups... they will hold it in place3. Curtain help! Dining and Living Room?it sounds like your rooms are kind of dark with the browns and dark browns.the red is a good accent color, use it for your curtains,if you feel this is too loud use the cream color.if you have a factory 2 u or a fallas paredes store in your area they have fantastic prices on curtains and usually a large selection on them as well.4. Switched from a Shower Door, To a shower Curtain, now there is No room to put a towel holder. What do we do?a shelf with hooks behind the door towel rack [ holds up to five things - two towels, two robes, and a washrag ]5. Will side, curtain and seat airbags deploy if car ignition is remote started. Does the car have to be in motionPeople. the vehicle DOES NOT have to be on. just the battery needs to be connected6. How does the term "Tear Down this wall" have to do with The Iron Curtain? Are you serious? You could not find any information on the Internet regarding that famous quote? I've got a tip for you...learn how to say "would you like fries with your Big Mac?" Edit: The majority of your questions are only asking others to do you homework for you! Quit being so frickin' lazy and do something for yourself! Otherwise, you are going to end up working minimum wage jobs the rest of your life.7. Why were all the Eastern Bloc states so insistent on following the "Iron Curtain" policy regarding their relations with the West, since Yugoslavia was a clear living proof that such a policy wasn't necessary for the survival the Communist regime? The answer is the Teheran meeting between Stalin Churchill and Roosewelt...On this meeteing they decided the influences on the Eastern block... Yugoslavia had the least Soviet influence, so it got more freedom... the rest had an iron grip...8. can i wash my bathroom rugs in the washing machine along with the shower curtain?I wash my bathroom rugs on the delicate cycle in cold water and then in the dryer on the lowest heat setting. If you are talking about a plastic shower curtain liner...I used to wash mine and hang it either back in the tub or outside on the line. It was not long before it had little cuts in it though, so I do not know if you should do that. Sometimes I just soak it in the tub in some bleach water, though I should add that my plastic curtain is not colored.9. Does your shower have a sliding door or a curtain?we've two showers - one of each!10. Will you walk in, read and c.c. "Shower Curtain" an overnight stay on way home? This is a well written piece, but if meant to scare did not induce any fear in me. waited too long for the fear, did not create an atmosphere of ominous dark clouds with rains made of a razor blades love. The blood is still stuck in my throat choking me slowly as i wanted to imagine the same ill fate manifest in her.11. My bird ate 3 small holes in my expensive linen curtain. What can I do to invisibly repair it?Buy some iron on patches, that way the hole wont run and get bigger when you wash them12. The way Winston Churchill described Stalin's idea of an iron curtain was exactlly the way it happened? It was from Trieste, on the Italian/Yugoslavian Border, and Stettin, which is now in Poland. It was - with hindsight - an obvious statement, as it was almost inevitable that two wildly opposing ideologies would be at loggerheads, and the dividing line was already drawn by the areas controlled by the respective armies.
