Can This $179 Mattress Cover Help You Sleep Better? New Gizmo Manages Your Bed's Temperature, Wakes

An innovative new product has emerged from Silicon Valley which fits over your mattress and works to improve your slumber.

The

Luna

mattress cover - which costs between $179 and $229 depending on its size - tracks the user's sleeping patterns using hundreds of tiny sensors to analyse breathing frequency, heart rate, temperature and movement.

It learns your regular bed time, then heats your bed to optimum levels, tracks the quality of your shut-eye and wakes you up in the morning during a light sleep phase - making rising easier - by syncing with the Luna app on your phone.

The Luna, which is machine washable and runs in sizes from Full to California King, can currently be pre-ordered and is scheduled to ship in August.

The futuristic mattress cover boasts dual-zone controls, which means its sensors can track you and your partner's side of the bed separately, then adjust temperature levels accordingly.

Microphone sensors can even tell whether either of you snored the previous night, and if so, who and how frequently.

Luna's co-founder, tech entrepreneur Matteo Franceschetti, based in San Francisco, California, developed the mattress cover to solve his own sleep problems.

'Everything around us is getting smarter, except our beds,' he says.

Mr Franceschetti estimates that in his seven years as a CEO, he has lost approximately 900 hours of sleep due to his restless legs syndrome.

Several sleep disorders, according to WebMD, can be improved by regulating the temperature of your sleeping environment.

The symptoms of restless legs syndrome, for example, which is an insomnia-inducing disorder characterized by an impulse to shift the legs around erratically, can be eased with the use of heating sleeping pads.

For customers who have 'smart-enabled' gadgets in their homes - such as app-controlled security systems, lights, thermostats and coffee brewers - the Luna can sync with them too.

That means that when you get into bed, the Luna will automatically signal your doors to lock, your burglar alarm to activate, your lights to switch off and your central heating to adjust.

And when you wake up in the morning, it can tell your coffee machine that you've just stepped out of bed and have your beans brewing for you faster than you can say 'triple espresso'.

An

Indiegogo

campaign to fund the last stages of Luna's production process launched yesterday and hit its $100,000 goal in just six hours.

As of today, it has raised more than $340,000.

Smartsilk Bedding Products Certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly
Common dust mites in beds cause allergies. And allergy sufferers and their partners often suffer from a very poor night of rest, which negatively impacts many other elements of their lives, including work and school performance, personal health and overall energy levels So SmartSilk has developed a full range of products to help allergy sufferers get a great night of sleep, which will hopefully lead to better health. The key to this good night's sleep lies in the bedding, insist the folks that produce SmartSilk products. We never sleep alone, they pointed out in a media release which, I confess, made me squirm in my chair. We spend about a third of our lives in bed and that bed is a haven for dust mites, they explained.. In fact, duvets, mattresses and pillows are the home to millions of dust mites because of the warm and humid environment that allows them to dine on human skin flakes.Dust mites are microscopic eight-legged relatives of spiders that devour cast-off flakes of human skin. They eat, mate and worst of all, defecate in beds and pillows. And therein lies the real problem. Dust mite excreta are loaded with allergens that cause human suffering. The microscopic droppings become airborne and readily escape from bedding to torment allergy sufferers. The droppings produce a protein that humans inhale while sleeping, causing respiratory passages to become inflamed and irritated creating a clogging in the lungs, the SmartSilk folks explained. According to MayoClinic.com, for some people, dust mite allergy may be the primary cause of inflammation and contraction of airways of the lungs (asthma), resulting in wheezing, shortness of breath and other breathing difficulties including snoring. There are over 50 million asthma and allergy sufferers in North America, of which 20% are children under the age of 18.Traditional mattress covers and pillow cases protect the mattress and pillow. In addition to protecting the bed, the SmartSilk bedding is designed to protect the person sleeping in it. Exposure to allergens is reduced when the mattress and pillows are covered with mite-barrier fabrics. Apparrently, SmartSilk serves as a natural barrier and actually repels the mites.According to the media release, SmartSilk bedding products have been proven to kill dust mites by removing the heat and moisture the bugs need to survive, adding that hey are the first and only all natural bedding to be certified asthma & allergy friendly by the Asthma Society of Canada. The silk filled duvet is lightweight and thin. It wicks moisture from a sleeper and dissipates it into the surrounding air instead of retaining it. These special wicking properties of the SmartSilk products transfer heat and humidity making for a more comfortable and restful sleep, especially for menopausal women plagued by night sweats or people dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy treatments.SmartSilk provides a full array of bedding products including duvets, mattress covers, pillows and pillow covers. The mattress pad is unique in that it is the only certified asthma & allergy friendly mattress cover that is five sided (as opposed to traditional six sided products), making it as easy to put on as a fitted sheet. For more information, visit . Bedding products range in price from $35 to $400 depending on the product of choice and are available through the website.
Defence at Mother's Murder Trial Says Girls' Deaths Remain a Mystery
Defence at Mother's Murder Trial Says Girls' Deaths Remain a Mystery
LAVAL, Que. - The lawyer for a Quebec mother accused of killing her two daughters said Monday that 10 years after the girls were found dead in their playroom, there is still no explanation of what happened."The mystery remains whole," Pierre Poupart said during the first day of closing arguments. He told jurors there were riddles in the case they would be talking about long after the trial ended. His client, Adele Sorella, is accused of killing her daughters Amanda, 9, and Sabrina, 8. The cause of death was never established after the girls' bodies were found, dressed in their school uniforms, in the family home on March 30, 2009. There were no signs of violence on their bodies. The Crown suggested during the trial the sisters could have been killed in a hyperbaric chamber. The family bought the apparatus to treat Sabrina's juvenile arthritis. A pathologist who testified on behalf of the Crown identified the chamber as a possible cause of the deaths, suggesting the girls could have suffocated inside it.Poupart, however, reminded jurors that an expert in materials testified that he did not find any fibres from the girls' clothing on the mattress cover inside the hyperbaric chamber. The expert also did not find any fibres from the mattress cover on the girls' clothes."This is part of the mystery," Poupart said. The lawyer warned jurors against thinking Sorella could have planned the murders and thought about possible fibre transfers: "She is not a criminal genius."Poupart told jurors that investigators never checked for fingerprints or signs of a break-in and failed to examine the hyperbaric chamber.Since the start of the investigation, there was a kind of "obsession of absolute certainty" that the person responsible for the girls' deaths was Sorella, Poupart said. The investigators' tunnel vision prevented them from looking for other clues in the case, he added. The Crown has maintained that only Sorella would have been able to cause the girls' deaths because no one else was in the home. But the defence has offered other theories. It brought up the fact Sorella's husband, Giuseppe De Vito, had installed a sophisticated alarm system in the home. De Vito, who died in prison in 2013, wasn't living with the family when his daughters were found dead. He was being sought by police as a suspect in an organized crime investigation."Ask yourselves this question: Could it be interpreted as a sign of worry that her husband installed an alarm system like that"The trial began in November. Poupart's closing arguments are scheduled to continue Tuesday.
Diy Platform Bed and Mattress Substitute - Out-of-the-box, Portable, Lightweight, Inexpensive
Diy Platform Bed and Mattress Substitute - Out-of-the-box, Portable, Lightweight, Inexpensive
Ever needed to lug a mattress, a box spring or a heavy, clunky wooden or metal bed up or down a few flights of stairs or load it into a car or van? Or worried about having to throw away an otherwise perfectly usable and expensive mattress / box springs because of bedbugs?Your bed and mattress (plus the box-spring) are probably one of the biggest headaches come time to move - especially if you're on your own.I wanted a portable, lightweight and inexpensive complete bedding solution that I could take apart and put back together at will, and whose individual pieces I could carry in my car when I move. A raised air bed seemed like the perfect one-stop solution - till they started devoloping leaks after just a few months, leading me to finally give up on them. So I went back to looking for the two separate main components - a portable, lightweight platform bed (eliminates the need for a box spring) and an equally portable and lightweight mattress that could preferably be rolled-up or folded for easy transportation.1) For the platform bed, I did find a few metal bed frames that seemed at least somewhat portable - for $109 for example, but found them too heavy and unwieldy. I didn't think they would fit in my car when moving, and in addition, I thought the steel edges would tear up my planned improvised mattress out of several sleeping bags. After a lot of research, I came up with a platform bed substitute that is workingwell for me. The items are easily available at a standard, international chain (IKEA) and each individual piece weighs just 10 lb and measures (as packaged) 22" W x 2.125" H x 33.125" L. You need no tools to assemble it,it gives youplenty of storage space hidden from view underneath, andyour improvised platform bed costs (as of 05/26/10) just about $96.2) For the mattress substitute, I thought of this inexpensive DIY solution using easily available standard components (a few sleeping bags and a zipperedmattress cover) that obviously requires no tools or any kind of workmanship - and it's working great for just $84. So this improvised queen bed and mattress, puttogetherpretty muchout-of-the-box from standard, widely available components, add up to all of $180!For a queen bed, buy 12 "LACK" side tables from IKEA - ($7.99 each as of 05/26/10). Each individual piece weighs just 10 lb and measures (as packaged) 22" W x 2.125" H x 33.125" L. Though made of particleboard and therefore extremely light, I was told each table can support the weight of one adult standing on it. I was able to load and fit all twelve packages into my subcompact quite easily.Assemble each of the 12 tables for the queen bedby attachingthe four legs to the table top with the help of the four screws supplied. The screw is pointed at both ends and there are markings on the underside of the table top and each leg showing where each screw goes in. You don't even need a screw driver as the leg itself acts as one. Assembling each table took me less than 15 minutes.Arrange the twelve tables side-by-side - three on one side, four on the other. Each table is 21.625" x 21.625" so the final dimension of your platform bed will be 86.5" x 64.875" - which is slightly bigger than a standard queen size mattress of 80" x 60" but once the bed sheets and covers are on the mattress, I haven't found it to be a problem. I thought I might need to duct tape or otherwise tiethe tables together but haven't needed to do it - the tables totally stay in place on their own. That's it for the first part - you now have your platform bed forless than$100,pretty muchoff-the-shelf, with plenty of storage space hidden from view underneath -that you can take apart and move(even up and down flights of stairs) all by yourself at any time. And you never messed with tape measures, hacksaws, clamps, drills and hammers in your garage, got your hands dirty or broke a sweat - did you?Next comes putting together your own, similarly off-the shelf, portable mattress. All you need for your mattress substitute are eight sleeping bags and one zippered vinyl / cotton mattress cover. You can use as many or as few sleeping bags as you like -I bought eight 33" x 75" sleeping bags from Wal-Mart for $9 each (as of 05/26/10) - The only other item Iam usingis a queen-size zipperedvinyl mattress cover I found at Target for $11.99 (as of 05/26/10) - . You could just as well use a zippered cotton mattress cover for a comparable price. Finally, just zip up the mattress cover, and voilà- you've created your own inexpensive, portable, lightweight, machine-washable mattress-substitute for around $84usingout of the boxmaterialseasily availableat your neighborhood stores. (OK - the mattress cover may not be machine washable if it's vinyl- butif you use a zippered cotton mattress cover instead, that wouldmake the covermachine-washable as well). Note:Obviously, you may use as many or as few sleeping bags as you like - as long as they fit inside one mattress cover. You may even use more than one of these mattress substitutes - all depending on what gives you the right amount of comfort. So now you have your platform bed and mattress substitute - making for a complete portable, lightweight andinexpensivebedding solution foraround $180.You will notice that as mentioned before, each square side table is 21.625" x 21.625" so the final dimension of your platform bed will be 86.5" x 64.875" - which is slightly bigger than a standard queen size mattress of 80" x 60".However, once the bed sheets and covers are on the bed, no one, including yourself, will ever know!!
Don't Let Nasty Bedbugs Bite | the Star
Don't Let Nasty Bedbugs Bite | the Star
Your home is supposed to be a sanctuary, a secure spot where you're safe from threats, both natural and man-made, that lurk beyond the white picket fence. But makers of many home improvement products say that ain't necessarily so. Your home, they want you to know, may be full of unseen hazards. Take the bedroom, for example and the problem with bedbugs, which appear to be on the rise in Canada's urban centres. According to Toronto Public Health, there are no known cases of disease associated with bedbug bites. But sensitive types can have localized allergic reactions to bites, which are commonly found on the face, neck, upper torso, arms and hands. Scratched bites may become infected. (For more information, go to toronto.ca/health/bedbugs.htm.) Using a good vacuum with a strong nozzle to periodically clean the mattress will help reduce the risk, as will a mattress cover. Just on the market is CleanRest, a breathable mattress cover made from a fabric weave so tiny that its makers say no allergen or liquid can penetrate it. I can't vouch for that. But having tried it, I can say it's thinner and more comfortable to sleep on than other plastic covers we've used. CleanRest is not currently available at retail locations in Canada, but it can be purchased online. For prices and more information, go to cleanrest.com.Mould and dust mites in mattresses and other furniture can also pose a health hazard for those with asthma and allergies. That's why the Asthma Society of Canada recommends sufferers have their mattresses vacuumed at least twice weekly. Dyson's line of upright vacuums, which were introduced to Canadian consumers two years ago, have just been named the first vacuums in Canada to receive the Asthma Society's certification. This means they significantly reduce allergens on carpets and floor without increasing airborne allergens through leakage and inadequate filtration. There's a superstition that lavender oil will discourage bedbugs. That's enough reason for me to continue to indulge in a small luxury - Lothantique lavender linen water from Au Lit Fine Linens (aulitfinelinens.com). The light scent of this mix, sold in attractive glass bottles and a convenient spray format, will freshen the bed and add a delicious fragrance to the bedroom. The water also comes in Verbena and Green Tea scents. Lavender water sells for $22, while the two others cost $20. (There's 10 per cent off these items during Au Lit's August sale). In another nod to bedroom safety, don't forget that it's the law that working smoke alarms be installed on every storey of a home and outside sleeping areas. If your home is missing alarms, consider a trip to Home Depot to pick up a twin pack of Kidde front-load battery smoke alarms, which cost about $23. The giant retailer is donating 10 per cent of the sale of this product, along with several other items, to the Mike Holmes' Make It Right Foundation, which offers scholarships to encourage young people to get into skilled trades. The kitchen can also be a pretty dangerous spot, and not just because it's home to hot temperatures and sharp objects. Every since Louis Pasteur demonstrated that bacteria could hurt humans, makers of kitchen products and cleansers have been telling us about the dangers of grease and grime. Rubbermaid has introduced sink ware that it says significantly reduces the growth of microbes. The new line, which includes dish drainers, sink mats, drain boards and sponge caddies, has antibacterial agents added to the resin from which it's made. According to Rubbermaid, these drainers will resist odour and stain-causing bacterial growth. They're available at Wal-Mart and Home Hardware. Pieces sell for between $16 and $20. Keeping a bar of soap next to the kitchen counter is a simple, inexpensive way to reduce bacterial growth. A 15-second hand washing (sing "Happy Birthday to You" through twice) will remove about 99.9 per cent of bacteria. But before you get too hung up on the germs, pests and bacteria that may be present in your home, consider the following. Much of the bacteria we come into contact with benefits the environment and our bodies. Bacteria, for example, helps us digest food. And when I first fretted that my less-than-stellar housekeeping skills might be exposing my kids to germs and bacteria, my wise mother-in-law shared with me a bit of wisdom from the 18th-century; namely that "you'll eat a peck of dirt before you die."
Clinical Evaluation of the Effect of Anti-allergic Mattress Covers in Patients with Moderate to Seve
Clinical Evaluation of the Effect of Anti-allergic Mattress Covers in Patients with Moderate to Seve
AbstractBackground: The use of anti-allergic mattress covers in patients with asthma can result in a large reduction in the level of house dust mite allergen in dust samples. Apart from a reduction in histamine induced bronchial hyperresponsiveness, there are few data on the effect of mattress covers on clinical efficacy and quality of life in patients with moderate to severe asthma. Methods: Thirty patients with asthma and house dust mite allergy were studied in a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled study. Before and after using anti-allergic covers for 1 year, dust was collected from the mattresses to determine concentrations of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p 1), and bronchial hyperresponsiveness and quality of life were measured. The patients scored their symptoms (lungs and nose), morning and evening peak flow values, and rescue medication for 14 days before and after the intervention period. Results: There was a significant reduction in the concentration of Der p 1 in the dust collected from the mattresses in the actively treated group after 1 year compared with before treatment; no change was found in the placebo group. In both the actively treated and placebo groups there was no significant improvement in PC20 histamine. Quality of life improved similarly in both groups. The symptom score of the lower airways did not significantly change in either group. A significant decrease in nasal symptom score was seen in the actively treated group compared with before treatment, but there was no significant difference between the groups. No changes in morning and evening peak flow values, peak flow variability, nor in the use of rescue medication were found in either group. Conclusion: The use of anti-allergic mattress covers results in significant reductions in Der p 1 concentrations in carpet-free bedrooms. However, in patients with moderate to severe asthma, airways hyperresponsiveness and clinical parameters are not affected by this effective allergen avoidance.METHODSPatientsThirty eight patients aged 11-44 years with a history of asthma and house dust mite allergy were recruited from the outpatients department of Asthmacenter Heideheuvel in Hilversum, The Netherlands, from January 1996 to December 1998. Informed consent was obtained from the patients or their parents. The patients were selected on the basis of increased bronchial responsiveness to histamine inhalation (PC20 1 μg Der p 1/g dust). All patients had FEV1 values >60% (predicted value). Patients had no history of respiratory tract infections in the previous 6 weeks or severe asthma attacks in the previous 6 months. None had received oral corticosteroids in the previous 6 months. All patients gave informed consent. The medical ethics committee of Asthmacenter Heideheuvel approved the study.Study designThe study was of a randomised, placebo controlled, double blind, parallel group design, comparing the effect of allergen impermeable encasings on the mattresses, pillows and bedcovers during 1 year with matching placebo encasings. At the start of the study a trained respiratory nurse visited the patients to collect dust samples from the mattresses of the patients for Der p 1 measurement and to note the allergen avoidance measures already present in the house. All patients included in the study had smooth bedroom floors. Patients were instructed to wash their sheets each week at 60°C. Apart from the mattress encasings, no other allergen avoidance measures were taken. At the end of the study the same nurse visited the houses again to collect dust from the mattress covers. The patients were included during the entire year; the inclusion period was 2 years. Pollen allergic patients were tested outside the pollen season. At the first visit patients underwent clinical evaluation. FEV1 and vital capacity (VC) values were measured, skin tests performed, and a PC20 histamine was assessed. Medication was withheld before the study period: inhaled steroids and sodium cromoglycate for 1 week before the bronchial histamine provocation test; theophyllines, oral β2 adrenergic agents, long acting inhaled β2 adrenergic agents, and antihistamines for 48 hours, and inhaled short acting β2 adrenergic drugs for 6 hours before the tests.Collection and extraction of house dustBefore the intervention, at 4 and 8 months, and at the end of the intervention mattress dust was collected by the same vacuum cleaner (Philips Vitall 377, 1300 watt, Philips, Eindhoven, The Netherlands) from the whole mattress during 2 minutes with a special filter device (ALK, Horsholm, Denmark). At the start of the study dust was collected directly from the mattresses; at the end of the study dust was collected on top of the encasings. The filters were stored in the freezer at -20°C until analysis at the end of the study.Der p 1 antigen was measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Monoclonal antibodies against Der p 1 were immobilised on a 96-well plate. Incubation with the dust extracts was followed by a second incubation step with a polyclonal antibody (horseradish peroxidase, HRP). After adding 1,2-phenyldiamine HCl (OPD) as substrate, absorption at 490 nm was measured using an ELISA reader.Histamine challengeHistamine phosphate solutions (doubling concentrations from 0.25 to 32 mg/ml) were administered through a De Vilbiss 646 nebuliser with a gauged output of 0.13 mg/ml. The nebuliser was mounted on a valve box with an aerosol filter. The nebulisation time was 30 seconds, during which the patient was instructed to breath quietly. The test was started with inhalation of a phosphate buffer aerosol. Before inhalation three measurements of VC and FEV1 were performed (Jaeger Masterscreen). FEV1 was measured after each concentration. PC20 histamine was derived by linear interpolation.Mattress encasingsMattresses, pillows, and bedding in the intervention group were encased with covers supplied by Cara C'air (Allergy Control AC btm Velserbroek, Netherlands). The matched placebo covers were made by the same company. The encasings were placed in position by a research nurse and left in situ for 1 year.Quality of lifeQuality of life was assessed by the Quality of Life for Respiratory Illness Questionnaire (QoL-RIQ).17 The QoL-RIQ is a disease specific quality of life questionnaire for patients with asthma and COPD which consists of 55 items divided into seven domains: breathing problems (9 items), physical problems (9 items), emotions (9 items), situations triggering/enhancing breathing problems (7 items), general activities (4 items), daily and domestic activities (10 items), social activities, relationships and sexuality (7 items). To focus the questions on the patients' experiences, items are formulated in terms of "how much trouble" they had experienced from the mentioned symptom or emotion. In the case of activity related items, questions are stated in terms of "how much they were impeded" by their disorder in carrying out that specific activity. Patients are asked to give their answer on a 70 point Likert scale ranging from "not at all" to "extremely" troubled or impeded. Reliability (test-retest, internal consistency) and validity have been proven.17Clinical parametersDuring the 14 day period before the intervention and at the end of the 12 month intervention period the patients were asked to keep diary cards in which asthma and nasal symptoms, peak flow values, and medication use were recorded twice daily. Asthma symptoms included dyspnoea, cough, expectoration, and wheezing. Nasal symptoms included nasal blockage, rhinorrhoea, sneezing, and itching. Each item was scored on a scale from 0 (no symptoms) to 4 (severe symptoms). The patients were trained in performing peak flow manoeuvres with the mini-Wright meter. They were instructed to perform three readings and to record the highest value in the morning when waking and in the evening before sleeping.Patients were asked to continue their normal inhalation medication and to record extra rescue medication in case they needed it.Data analysisStatistical analyses were performed with SPSS. Comparisons within groups (before and after intervention) were made with the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Logarithmic data were analysed using the sign test. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for between group comparisons. p values of 0.5)18 were seen in breathing problems, physical problems related to chest problems, triggering/enhancing circumstances, and total score in both the treated and the placebo groups. Although the size of the improvements did not significantly differ between the two groups, improvements within the treated group were significant.Clinical parametersBaseline values of asthma symptom scores showed no significant differences between the groups (table 2). The median pulmonary symptom score did not change significantly over 1 year in either group. There was a significant decrease in the nasal symptom score in the treated group (p=0.04) but not in the placebo group; the difference between the two groups was not significant. Baseline PEF values (morning and evening) were comparable for both groups (table 3). No significant changes in morning and evening PEF, peak flow variability, or the use of rescue medication occurred in either group following the 1 year intervention.View this table:View inlineView popupTable 2 Symptom score before and after intervention (median values of 14 days of registration)View this table:View inlineView popupTable 3 Peak flow values before and after intervention (median values of 14 days of registration)DISCUSSIONThis study was performed to investigate the effect of anti-allergic mattress encasings in carpet free bedrooms on Der p 1 exposure in the bed and on clinical parameters in patients with moderate to severe asthma with allergy to house dust mite. We found a significant reduction in Der p 1 concentration in the dust collected from the mattresses in the actively treated group compared with the placebo group. PC20 histamine did not improve during the 1 year intervention period. Although a significant improvement in nasal symptoms and quality of life was observed only in the actively treated group, we found no significant difference between the placebo and actively treated groups in the change in pulmonary and nasal symptoms, quality of life, peak flow values, and use of rescue medication.Earlier studies using several different types of mattress encasings have also shown a reduction in Der p 1 exposure on top of the mattress (table 4).8-10,19,20 However, other studies did not show a reduction in Der p 1 concentrations and, remarkably, the carpets in the bedroom were not removed in these studies.21,22 We excluded the problem of Der p 1 contamination from the floor13 by including only patients who had uncarpeted floors in their bedroom. This may have contributed to the fact that we could reach a significant reduction in the actively treated group even though we had higher baseline Der P 1 concentrations than other studies.22,23 The reduction in allergen concentration was reached after 4 months and remained during the whole study period.View this table:View inlineView popupTable 4 Overview of results and set up of controlled mattress cover studiesAlthough Der p 1 concentrations were significantly reduced in the actively treated group compared with the placebo group, we did not find a significant reduction in bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Other studies have also failed to demonstrate an improvement in bronchial hyperresponsiveness.10,11,22 Two studies22,23 did not find a substantial reduction in allergen concentrations in dust, which explains the lack of improvement in bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Frederick et al10 stated that all patients were reasonably controlled on regular prophylactic treatment, so little or no change in clinical parameters could be expected. Even Cloosterman and coworkers,11 who tried to avoid this treatment effect by including only patients who either did not use inhaled steroids or were able to stop them, did not find a significant improvement in bronchial hyperresponsiveness nor in any of the clinical parameters used such as symptom score, PEF variability, and reversibility of FEV1.How can we reconcile these observations? Patients participating in our study had severe hyperresponsiveness despite relatively high doses of inhaled corticosteroids of > 800 μg (for comparison, PC20
How to Snag a Deal by Writing an Amazon Review
How to Snag a Deal by Writing an Amazon Review
A couple of years ago, I was contacted by a company that had seen a review I had written on Amazon and wanted to send me a comparable item to check out. The only caveat was that in exchange for the free item, I needed to post an honest review to Amazon. Of course, I agreed to this arrangement -- I love receiving free stuff and sharing my opinion, so this seemed like a great opportunity. It is my understanding that companies offer their items in exchange for reviews because the more reviews you have -- good or bad -- the higher your product will appear in Amazon search results and this can be important if you really want to get your items in front of shoppers. For instance, I just did a search for "pink shoes" and received 152,080 results. Most people aren't going to take the time to scan all of those results, so appearing on the first few pages will help the company sell more product. The original way to get items for free to review on Amazon was to become an Amazon Vine reviewer. Vine reviewers frequently receive free items in exchange for their honest opinions. While this sounds great, Amazon handpicks those people they want to be a part of the program. They have never disclosed what it takes to be chosen for the Vine program, but the consensus seems to be that it takes a combination of frequent reviewing and having those reviews be marked as "helpful" by other Amazon shoppers. As I am not an avid reviewer on Amazon, my chances of ever being chosen for Vine are pretty slim. At the time I was offered the one product in exchange for a review I thought it was a one-off thing, but I have received quite a few similar offers this year. While randomly getting emailed may not be in the cards for everyone, there are a couple of companies that make it quite easy to get items for cheap or free in exchange for honest Amazon reviews.HonestFew (honestfew.com): After registering for an account, you will begin receiving emails letting you know if there are new products available for review. If there is a product that you would like to review, you will need to grab a coupon code, purchase the item from Amazon at a super discounted rate and then post your review to Amazon within two weeks of receiving the product. Once your review is posted to Amazon, you also need to submit the review link to HonestFew. Those who do not review the items they are sent are removed from the program.HonestFew just launched a few weeks ago, and while I have only seen them offer one item for free, there have been some fantastic items on heavy discount. For instance, they recently offered whiskey stones for $1, a grill brush for $1.25 and a set of three nonstick baking mats for $2.95. The baking mats, in particular, were a great deal as these retail for close to $50!SnagShout (snagshout.com): SnagShout launched recently and varies quite a bit from HonestFew. You still need to register for an account, however, and at that point you will gain access to a marketplace of items that are available from Amazon at discounted prices. The majority of the discounts offered are between 30 and 90 percent off, depending on the product, but you will even find a few items that are free. Items listed on the site run the gamut from toys to beauty products to general household items such as flashlights and bedroom sets. There's a little bit of everything. This weekend, we will be putting my son's crib together, and one item that I was planning on picking up in the next couple of days is a waterproof crib mattress cover. After verifying my account with SnagShout, I found that I could purchase a waterproof crib mattress cover from Amazon for $1.99 in exchange for a review. Typically this mattress cover costs $29.99, so I am pretty excited! While receiving free and discounted products is fun, the most important part of the transaction is writing the honest review on Amazon. It is worth noting that all items that were provided free or at a discount need to have the following sentence included in the review per Amazon review guidelines: "This product was provided at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review." Taking the time to provide an honest review is important because companies want to hear what you have to say about their product, but more importantly, so do your fellow shoppers.Lisa Koivu is the founder of ShopGirlDaily.com, a budget fashion and shopping blog for women who want to have the best for less.
